Grant Description & Goals
Northern Waters Land Trust received grant funding from the Initiative Foundation to:
- Explore the viability of forest carbon sequestration within land conservation easement programs.
- Determine the type and level of financial incentive likely to encourage landowners to participate in a carbon sequestration program.
NWLT is partnering with Hubbard County SWCD, MN DNR, and Bemidji State University to survey landowners, survey conservation easement administrators, and conduct a literature review of current carbon sequestration & land protection work being conducted in the United States.
What is Carbon Sequestration and Why Is It Important?
Carbon sequestration: A process by which carbon dioxide is removed from the atmosphere and is held.
These graphs demonstrate the drastic increase of carbon dioxide into Earth's atmosphere. Impacts of increased carbon dioxide include:
